About Me
I played my first round of golf (9 holes after work) in 1983. I played again a few times that summer with my co-workers and once a few years later with my roommate. It was a great excuse to socialize (and drink beer), but I found the game too difficult to take seriously and didn't play again for about a decade.
In the early 1990s, my best buddy D.W. loaned me a set of old clubs and we played a few rounds. But golf remained just a good excuse to get together and down a couple of beers. In 1995 he talked me into going on a 3-day golf outting with him, his dad, and a bunch of friends. I bought my first set of golf clubs and took a series of group lessons.
Over the next several years, we played off and on (mostly off) and wondered out loud how it would feel (and what it would take) to get better at it. We even joined a golf club in 1999 and established handicaps for a year.
Then in 2001, I finally decided to try taking golf more seriously. I joined a local golf club, bought a custom-fit set of clubs and began taking one-on-one lessons. I also decided to enter my first tournament. My scores quickly began to drop (my index went from 24.9 to a low of 12.7) and golf began to be much more fun.
I've become a member of the Board of Directors of my local golf club (www.ermgc.com), which keeps me active in the sport and gives me at least two good opportunities to play each month. For me, the key to getting the most out of golf is to get good instruction, practice regularly, and to always have good equipment.
I hope this web site helps increase your enjoyment of the game of golf.
